Many of you have been asking me and my staff what the future holds for The Bard. As we are smack dab in the middle of The Ten-Tucky Festival (perhaps the most Bard thing we do), it seemed fitting to let you all in on the future of The Bard’s Town and Bard Theatre.
THE SHORT VERSION 2-3 options exist; with how complicated a move or closing will most likely be, I realistically only have the next 30 days to make a final decision. Option 1 is to bring the Bard journey to a close. Option 2 is to keep it going, and move to a new location. The possible 3rd option is to stay one more year in the current location. (If you read on, you’ll see why that is currently considered only a possible option.)
THE FULL VERSION Back in January, I got a call from the landlord telling me I either needed to agree to paying $2000/month more in rent in 2022, or he was going to list the space both for sale and for lease starting in February. With sales still lagging way behind pre-pandemic figures and--knowing how much I owe back to the government in disaster loan money--I didn’t have much to think about. I would not be paying $2000 more a month, and he would be listing the property.
If you wondered why I looked particularly stressed during the first half of this year, the reason was simple: I knew it was entirely possible that the building could be sold or leased at any point, and I could be forced to close at the end of whatever month that was. Of course, I couldn’t say anything about it because that could potentially lead to groups canceling their shows here and going elsewhere, which would result in me having to close regardless. That has been a LOT to keep to oneself.
But now here we are in mid-September, and I can only imagine the possibility of having NO buyer or tenant is not pleasant for the landlord, so over the last month I have begun to see the possibility of staying for one more year—ONLY, though, at the amount I pay currently.
HOW YOU CAN HELP Those who know me well know that I can be stubborn, and I hate feeling like a burden to others…so asking for help is not something I do often (or well).
BUT THE TRUTH IS, I DO NEED YOUR HELP. We need funds to make a move viable, or to make this current building functional if we stay. If you can help financially, we would be eternally grateful for your support. If helping financially isn't feasible for you, we're still eternally grateful for you...and we bet you know a few folks who can help financially, and would love for you to talk us up!
